Rugs of the world : DESIGN CLASSICS

Café Daum Coat Stand by Ton

The clothes piled on the floor make your home seem like a multicolored molehill. And with fall fast approaching, bulky coats and jackets threaten to send your wardrobe through the roof.

We say: It's time to think ahead.

Let's visualise ? it's 19th-century Vienna: the café culture is booming, and high society congregates daily to gossip and sip capucin. Here, among the fug of smoke, chatter and coffee highs, design innovator is at work creating stylish, wooden furniture using all-new methods.

In 1849, as part of his first major commission of Michael Thonet the German-Austrian carpenter and (soon-to-be) industrialist used his newly perfected steam-bent solid wood to design a coat stand for the Café Daum.

The simple frame, which houses hats, coats and brollies, became synonymous with the era and, more than a century later, continues to be a common feature in cosmopolitan cafés and contemporary hallways the world over, we even have one in our York showrooms.

Tribal Rugs

An authentic oriental rug is a handmade carpet that is either knotted with pile or woven without pile.

These rugs normally come from a broad geographical region extending from China and Vietnam in the east to Turkey, Maghreb countries, Cyprus and Iran in the west and the Caucasus in the north to India in the south. People from different cultures, countries, racial groups and religious faiths are involved in the production of oriental rugs. Oriental rugs are organized by origin: Persian rugs, Arab rugs, Anatolian rugs, Kurdish rugs, Caucasian rugs, Central Asian rugs, Turkestanian (Turkmen, Turkoman) rugs, Chinese rugs,Tibetan rugs and Indian rugs.

The weaving of pile rugs is a difficult and tedious process which, depending on the quality and size of the rug, may take anywhere from a few months to several years to complete.

To begin making a rug, one needs a foundation consisting of warps strong, thick threads of cotton, wool or silk which run the length of the rug and wefts similar threads which pass under and over the warps from one side to the other. The warps on either side of the rug are normally combined into one or more cables of varying thickness that are overcast to form the selvedge.

Weaving normally begins by passing a number of wefts through the bottom warp to form a base to start from. Loosely piled knots of dyed wool or silk are then tied around consecutive sets of adjacent warps to create the intricate patterns in the rug. As more rows are tied to the foundation, these knots become the pile of the rug. Between each row of knots, one or more shots of weft are passed to tightly pack down and secure the rows.
Depending on the fineness of the weave, the quality of the materials and the expertise of the weavers, the knot count of a hand made rug can vary anywhere from 16 to 550 knots per square inch.

When the rug is completed, the warp ends form the fringes that may be weft-faced, braided, tasseled, or secured in some other manner.

These Tribal rugs can be viewed in our rugs shop based inYorkshire ( york rug shop )or London rug warehouse.

Rug guide : Kilim Rugs

Kilim, a word of Turkish origin, denotes a pileless textile of many uses produced by one of several flatweaving techniques that have a common or closely related heritage and are practiced in the geographical area that includes parts of Turkey (Anatolia and Thrace), North Africa, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia and China . Kilims are produced by tightly interweaving the warp and weft strands of the weave to produce a flat surface with no pile. Most kilim weaves are "weft-facing", i.e., the horizontal weft strands are pulled tightly downward so that they hide the vertical warp strands

All that information aside we think they look pretty good.

Rugs of the World :Bold & bright

Bold & bright

We’re tired of doom and gloom and are looking for a more positive outlook and rediscovering our sense of humour. That’s making us all more creative and there’s a real trend for bold brights or blocks of colour which add fun into our homes. Florals will still predominate, whether chintzy, modern or echoing an Eastern theme.

Get the look: Layering is a great way to freshen a room without breaking the bank. “Use throws and rugs, as well as fabrics, for blinds, curtains or upholstery echoing your theme.

If too much pattern makes you nervous, experiment by featuring it on cushions and bedding, and introduce more colour on table settings with charger plates, placemats and coloured glassware.”

Add bold colour through you rug:

David Hockney: Bigger Trees Near Warter

Special Exhibitions

David Hockney's painting Bigger Trees Near Warter, on loan from Tate, is the largest painting the artist has ever produced and measures 40 x 15 feet (12 x 4 metres).

Featuring two copses, a huge sycamore tree, buildings and early flowering daffodils, the painting comprises of 50 individual canvas panels and takes inspiration from a site at Warter in the Yorkshire Wolds.

Painted en plein air (outside) in six weeks, the artist used digital technology to help him complete the painting, creating a computer mosaic of the picture which enabled him to 'step back' and see it as a whole.

The exhibition is the highlight of Art in Yorkshire - supported by Tatea year-long celebration of the visual arts in 19 galleries throughout Yorkshire. Works from Tate's Collection of historic, modern and contemporary art will be showcased through a compelling programme of exhibitions and events.

It will is the first time the Hockney painting has been seen outside London in the UK. Films, including Bruno Wollheim's documentaryA Bigger Picture, showing Hockney at work, will be shown in the same gallery, alongside additional information on how Hockney created his incredible painting

Wollheim will be attending an exclusive screening of his film on 3 March, 2011, and answering questions afterwards. Click here for more details.

Visit the Tate Britain website here to find out more about this work of art and how Hockney created it.

Visit Hockney's own website here for a great selection his work through the decades.

Rugs of the world : Things we love

THE ARCO LAMP BY FLO

Developed in 1962, the graceful, arching Arco reached new heights in lighting design

Designed by Achille Castiglioni and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni as a freestanding interior version of a street lamp, the aim was to produce a lamp so stunning that fixed lights would become obsolete.

The arching arm is fixed to a white marble base that weighs over 60kg, with a hole for a stick (such as a broom handle) to be inserted, enabling two people to lift it from room to room.

It's one of the most admired objects of the post-war period, and the lamp's iconic status was sealed when it was seen on screen in films such as The Italian Job and Diamonds Are Forever

We love them............
