Through out history Persia has remained the epicentre of the carpet making craft, where it has developed into an art form. A gradual increase in Persian carpets started to emerge around this period and as trade links between Britain and the Persian Safavid Empire developed more Persian rugs entered Britain. Following the establishment of the Silk Route which connected Persia to Britain via the Silk Road, a predominance of Persian rugs and carpets found their way into the UK . With the expansion of the middle classes in the 17th to 19th century oriental rugs prospered as luxury items which trigged the production of rugs for the western market across the Caucasus, Anatolian, India and China. Typically, a traditional Persian carpet is tied with a single looping knot (Persian or Senneh Knot), while the traditional Anatolian carpet is tied with a double looping knot (Turkish or Ghiordes Knot). This means that for every 'vertical strand' of thread in a Large Persian carpet, an Anatolian carpet has two loops as opposed to the one loop for the various Persian carpets that use a Persian 'single' knot. Ultimately, this process of 'double knotting' in traditional Anatolian carpets results in a slightly more block like image compared to the traditional 'single knotted' Persian carpet. Ziegler (Zeigler) is the name of a design rather than an actual city or tribe. Ziegler design rugs are sometimes known as Chobi rugs or Peshawar rugs. A German company based in Manchester (England), Ziegler and Co. commissioned the development of the original Ziegler rugs back in 1883. Using leading designers and master weavers from Iran and Europe, Ziegler and Co. managed to create a design using softer palettes than those typically found in Iran. Ziegler rugs were designed with the western market in mind and fit perfectly into almost any home. Based on a softer version of the Sultanabad design their muted colours using vegetable dyes and simple, yet striking pattern fit well with modern neutral colour schemes and both contemporary or traditional furniture.
The weaving of Zeigler rugs began in the Arak provence, however, they are now made all over the Persian region. Most new Ziegler rug designs are crafted in Afghanistan and labelled Chobi (which translates in Farsi to wood, a reference to their natural colour created by the vegetable dye). Much like cola being called coke regardless of the brand Ziegler rugs are known as Ziegler even though they are not made by Ziegler & Co.

An authentic oriental rug is a handmade carpet that is either knotted with pile or woven without pile.
These oriental rugs normally come from a broad geographical region extending from China and Vietnam in the east to Turkey, Maghreb countries, Cyprus and Iran in the west and the Caucasus in the north to India in the south. People from different cultures, countries, racial groups and religious faiths are involved in the production of oriental rugs. Oriental rugs are organized by origin: Persian rugs, Arab rugs, Anatolian rugs, Kurdish rugs, Caucasian rugs, Central Asian rugs, Turkestanian rugs, Chinese rugs, Tibetan rugs and Indian rugs.

Aubusson rugs and Needlepoint rugs are all still hand woven using the same techniques as the pieces seen in the palaces of Louis XIV. Renowned for their elegance and flowing floral designs, these rugs and carpets are timeless pieces of arts. Aubusson rugs woven in Aubusson were at first based on Persian models when a center of French carpet production began in the mid 17th century. From the mid 19th century, Aubusson rug designs began competing with those of the English. These flat woven wool carpets were created mainly for the sophisticated wealthy European client. The Savonnerie carpets from their creation were woven by the royal manufacturer for Louis XIV to Louis XVI. Only the king was able to own or rarely sell a Savonnerie carpet, leading to the development of the Aubusson. These flat woven carpets emulated the designs of the Savonnerie carpets. This lead to its vast popularity with the wealthy European community. Kilim, a word of Turkish origin, denotes a pileless textile of many uses produced by one of several flatweaving techniques that have a common or closely related heritage and are practiced in the geographical area that includes parts of Turkey (Anatolia and Thrace), North Africa, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia and China . Kilims are produced by tightly interweaving the warp and weft strands of the weave to produce a flat surface with no pile.
