Large rugs

Rugs of the World are specialists in Large rugs and large oriental carpets, these oversized rugs are typically over 13ft x 10ft (400cm x 305cm ) and tend to be Oriental or persian in design and all are handmade hand knotted carpets and can be viewed in our rugs showrooms based in Yorkshire or nationwide via home viewing.

Persian carpets

Through out history Persia has remained the epicentre of the carpet making craft, where it has developed into an art form. A gradual increase in Persian carpets started to emerge around this period and as trade links between Britain and the Persian Safavid Empire developed more Persian rugs entered Britain. Following the establishment of the Silk Route which connected Persia to Britain via the Silk Road, a predominance of Persian rugs and carpets found their way into Britain. With the expansion of the middle classes in the 17th to 19th century oriental rugs prospered as luxury items which trigged the production of rugs for the western market across the Caucasus, Anatolian, India and China.

Hall runner

Hall carpet runners are all unique handmade pieces made from 100% wool and range in sizes that start at 150cm x 60cm and go to above 600cm (20ft) in length that are designed to accomodate hallways. These hall runners can be found in our Yorkshire oriental rugs showrooms

Large Persian Carpet

Typically, a traditional Persian carpet is tied with a single looping knot (Persian or Senneh Knot), while the traditional Anatolian carpet is tied with a double looping knot (Turkish or Ghiordes Knot). This means that for every 'vertical strand' of thread in a Large Persian carpet, an Anatolian carpet has two loops as opposed to the one loop for the various Persian carpets that use a Persian 'single' knot. Ultimately, this process of 'double knotting' in traditional Anatolian carpets results in a slightly more block like image compared to the traditional 'single knotted' Persian carpet.

Large silk carpet

Silk carpets date back to at least the sixteenth century in Sabzavar and the Seventeenth century in Kashan and Yazd. Silk carpets are less common than wool carpets since silk is more expensive and less durable; they tend to increase in value with age. Due to their rarity and value, silk carpets are often displayed on the wall like tapestries aswell as being used as floor coverings. Silk rugs and carpets can be the most valuable of the oriental rugs .

Handmade rugs

Two basic knots ( in hand knotted rugs )are used in most persian carpets and oriental rugs : the symmetrical Turkish or Ghiordes knot (used in Turkey, the Caucasus, East Turkmenistan, and some Turkish and Kurdish areas of Iran), and the asymmetrical Persian or Senneh knot (Iran, India, Turkey, Pakistan, China, and Egypt).To make a Turkish knot, the yarn is passed between two adjacent warps, brought back under one, wrapped around both forming a collar, then pulled through the center so that both ends emerge between the warps.The Persian knot is used for fine handmade rugs ( hand knotted rugs ). The yarn is wrapped around only one warp, then passed behind the adjacent warp so that it divides the two ends of the yarn. The Persian knot may open on the left or the right, and rugs woven with this knot are generally more accurate and symmetrical. This production is now being used in contemporary rugs bring old fashioned hand knotting mixed with modern contemporary rug design.

Aubusson rugs

Aubusson rugs and Needlepoint rugs are all still hand woven using the same techniques as the pieces seen in the palaces of Louis XIV. Renowned for their elegance and flowing floral designs, these rugs and carpets are timeless pieces of arts. Aubusson rugs woven in Aubusson were at first based on Persian models when a center of French carpet production began in the mid 17th century. From the mid 19th century, Aubusson rug designs began competing with those of the English. These flat woven wool carpets were created mainly for the sophisticated wealthy European client. The Savonnerie carpets from their creation were woven by the royal manufacturer for Louis XIV to Louis XVI. Only the king was able to own or rarely sell a Savonnerie carpet, leading to the development of the Aubusson. These flat woven carpets emulated the designs of the Savonnerie carpets. This lead to its vast popularity with the wealthy European community. Aubusson rugs graced the floors throughout all of Europe in the 17th and the 18th century.
